BELMONT. Take a short trip down I-77 to explore these beautiful gardens that were developed by a retired textile executive in the 1990s. Since the grand opening in 1999, the gardens have become a premier wedding destination, as well as host for the Southern Living gardening school. Enjoy some of your favorite soothing tunes as you stroll through the twelve different sections and trails, all of which offer distinct vegetation, fountains, and plantings.
DILWORTH. Sure, everybody knows about Starbucks and Seattle's Best, but Dilworth Coffee House is widely known as Charlotte's best! As soon as you walk in, inviting scents and a warm interior encourage you to take a seat and drift off to another place – a feat made easier if you happened to load some Miles Davis on your player. The coffee is fantastic, and the service is even better. This location is the original, but since their start in 1989, the company has expanded to 13 locations, most of which are in Charlotte.
UPTOWN. Discovery Place is a great way to spend a day, whether you're by yourself or with a group, young or old. Indeed, it's a safe bet that everybody will walk away from a day at Discovery Place knowing a few things they hadn't known before. The facility features exhibits on anatomy, physics, natural science, machines, and much more. If you're alone, browse the halls listening to some of your favorite music. Be sure to take in the aquarium, rain forest, planetarium, and various activity rooms.
DILWORTH. Located between the posh Myers Park and Dilworth areas of town, this park has it all. Its basketball and volleyball courts are some of the most popular in town, and you can always find a pick-up game. If you're more in the mood for relaxation, take a walk by Sugar Creek and down to the enormous duck pond while enjoying some of your favorite tunes. If you're lucky, you might even happen upon an event at the amphitheater in the back of the park.
SOUTH END. Hop the trolley from Uptown and head to the Historic South End, an area that has emerged as one of the city's most distinctive districts. Here, among old mills and warehouses, you'll find Charlotte's eclectic side. While you stroll around, relax to soothing tunes and take in the construction on Charlotte's first rapid transit line, due to be completed in late 2007. When lunch time rolls around, try Price's Chicken Coop, a true local legend. Afterwards, be sure to make passes through trendy shops like Niche, Black Sheep or American Appeal.
CORNELIUS. If sand, boats, and water are your way to relax, then head a little north of Charlotte. Jetton Park is a 105-acre waterfront park on Lake Norman that gives you opportunities to sit on the beach, watch boats go by, walk on the trails, or take your own vessel on the water and listen while you coast over the waves. Bring your player at dusk and watch the sun set over the water – a sure way to end your day right!
PINEVILLE. Mecklenburg County made a decision years ago to unite the city via a web of parks and green spaces. They've poured lots of money into the project, and the result is something that can be enjoyed by all. Over 30 miles of greenways have been developed, and almost 150 miles are still being planned. In fact, the greenway system is quickly becoming one of the country's finest, and the eight existing parcels, like McMullen & Lower McAlpine Creek, are definitely worth checking out – and enjoying to music.
UNIVERSITY AREA. Located in the front of Reedy Creek Park, this dedicated terrain is actually called Barkingham Park. Bring your four-legged friend to the four-acre, fenced-off area for fun with other canines. You can relax and enjoy music while your pet spends time meeting new friends. The park is an off-leash area, so you'll need a "Pooch Pass" and be required to maintain your dog's current vaccinations. A Pooch Pass application can be downloaded from the park's website.
SOUTHPARK. Since its complete makeover in the early 2000s, SouthPark has quickly become the Carolinas' premier shopping destination. SouthPark claims the only Neiman-Marcus in the Carolinas, as well as one of only two Nordstrom's. A consistently high-end clientele can be found on any given day, dressed to the nines and browsing the racks at many posh boutiques. Throw in your hippest music and take in the scenery while relaxing on a convenient bench or hanging out in the food court.
UNIVERSITY AREA. Take a stroll or a jog across Char-Meck's largest university campus. Rolling hills and modern academic buildings make it a perfect place to get lost in your own little world for an hour or two. From the athletic fields on West Campus to Van Landingham Glen and Susie Harwood Garden on East Campus, plenty of beautiful spaces let you lose yourself in the scenery and in your own private soundtrack.
