BALLANTYNE. Owned and managed by a husband-wife team, Global does, indeed, take a worldwide approach to food, informed by the couple's travels and tastes. Both romantic and casual, the restaurant is well-suited to both special occasions and to dinners out with friends. No matter which course you choose, the menu points out the provenance of individual dishes, letting you take a culinary journey from your own seat. Tasty selections: paella, braised lamb shank, roasted duck breast, and tuna encrusted with wasabi peas. Good bar scene too.

SOUTH END. Behind Uptown Charlotte and near the railroad tracks, Price's has been in business since 1962, and it hasn't changed much since opening. Price's is famous for having the city's best deep-fried chicken and flounder plates, served with coleslaw, hushpuppies, and French fries. Two can easily share one plate. Although it's take-out only, you can call up to half an hour ahead with your order.

SOUTHPARK. Terracotta stained floors, granite counters, and an open kitchen mark this restaurant's interior, and an additional dining area, accented with stone work, topiaries and a trellis, is open to outdoors. Irresistible starters like tomato basil bisque with goat lady chevre crostini whet your appetite for amazing Northern Italian masterpieces such as grilled leg of lamb with cannellini beans, butter bean and pea "cassoulet," and rosemary chevre mashed potatoes. Several unusual pizzas, baked on organic whole wheat sour dough, are also a hit.

SOUTH END. What was originally a 1914 Methodist/Episcopal church has been transformed into a magnificent restaurant that's gained the reputation of being an upscale gathering place for local movers and shakers. Arrive early and enjoy one of 200 wines by the glass at the bar. Menu selections range from foie gras terrine to fried lobster tails, and great detail is paid to presentation. Don't miss the tables for two that are tucked under the arches and softly lit by wall sconces.

SOUTH END. Nikko entered Charlotte's restaurant scene with a bang and has continued to make waves in the years since with its stylish yet personable approach to the sushi experience. Choose from a dynamic selection of rolls, each of them prepared before your very eyes. As you wait, fill up on tempura and teriyaki ... perhaps even a glass of beer or wine. As the crowds of devotees who pack the dining room each weekend no doubt attest, few places in the Queen City can deliver sushi quite like Nikko.

SOUTHPARK. When dining in P.F. Chang's, the only clue that you're in Charlotte is from your server's Southern drawl. Otherwise, you could very well be in Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles. The interior is bold and sophisticated, and the service is excellent and personable. P.F. Chang's signature starter is cool, softened lettuce leaves with your choice of vegetable or chicken fillings. The martinis are expertly prepared. Your server is well versed in all of the entree selections, so simply ask!! Lunch and dinner daily.
